"Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is a leading Government organization in India, entrusted with the responsibility of undertaking archeological research and protection of the cultural heritage in India. Archaeological and historical pursuits in India started with the formation of the Asiatic Society in AD 1784. ASI with its current structure was formed in 1861 by Sir Alexander Cunningham.

Archaeological Survey of India is entrusted with the immense task of protecting 3667 monuments in India which include 18 world heritage sites. ASI\'s function is to explore, excavate, conserve, preserve and protect the monuments and sites of National and International importance. ASI has provided expert advice and technical support for projects in several countries like Cambodia, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Laos, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nepal, Bahrain, Maldive Islands, Bhutan, Angloa, Vietnam and Myanmar.

One of the most interesting and challenging projects presently undertaken by Archaeological Survey of India is the conservation and restoration of the Ta Prohm Temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This project has commenced in January 2004 and aims to protect the authenticity and integrity of this 12th century temple complex. Earlier ASI had also undertaken the most stupendous task of conserving the Ankor Wat Temple in Cambodia in 1986.

This book attempts to highlight the conservation strategy adopted by ASI and focuses on the technical studies and investigations undertaken for understanding the complexities of this unique and outstanding heritage of the ancient city of Angkor." (jacket)
