In this collection, Ben Richards and Robin Matthews share with the readers their passion to better understand "Our role and place in the universe" (with no strings attached). They achieved this by describing chunks, some of CERN's contribution to this extraordinary journey of exploration at the frontier of human knowledge. Producing such a carefully curated booklet is a remarkable effort. With its clear language and visually engaging look, it will certainly be as useful resource for their fellow students and teachers. I am certain that it will further contribute to raise awareness of the fundamental questions asked at CERN, as well as how, in answering this question, physicist and engineers have developed technologies that have found application across society. Ultimately it will add to the many voices for the value for the value of fundamental research.
