Contents: Preface. 1. The life of the Buddha. 2. The doctrine. 3. The ethics. 4. The brotherhood. 5. In defence of Buddhism.

"Buddhism is to give a short, popular description of the Buddha’s life and doctrine. The old, genuine Buddhism does not exist any more anywhere in its original purity, and in the land of its birth it has even entirely disappeared through persecutions by Brahmins and Mohammedans.

As this treatise aims at presenting a popular account of Buddhism, I have not appended references for the extracts from the Tipitaka which are given in quotation marks, but these are exact translations of the old texts, culled from the works of Rhys Davids, Oldenberg, Neumann, Ed. Hardy, Pischel, Seidenstucker, etc.

The original edition of the present work appeared in the international language Ido; in this edition some portions are amplified to facilitate comprehension. It is therefore not a literal translation, but rather a free adaptation with the Ido original as a basis." (jacket)
