Really enjoyed this book. This engaging novel was a pleasure to read. In the tradition of Sinclair Lewis’s Babbitt and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, The Dwarf’s Moon is an unflinching but compassionate portrayal of a man (in his late twenties to early thirties) who is struggling to raise himself up from his humble beginnings to find love and success—while still maintaining his morality—in the amoral brave new world of capitalism. Rahul and his world, however, are more complex than either George Babbitt or Willy Loman and their circumstances. Rahul, a poor Roman Catholic who has faced discrimination all his life, rises from a life in a slum in Kolkata to the pinnacle of success in Delhi. He woos back his ex-wife Anita, a rich Hindu girl, who had left him because he was poor but soon realises that Anita, who had always been the dominant partner, is jealous of his success. The Dwarf’s Moon will be enlightening not only for readers who want a better understanding of Indian history and its varied and fast-changing society and culture but also for readers already familiar with this world—and this book can also be enjoyed by any reader who simply likes a good story well told.
