This volume brings together the seminal contributions of distinguished sociologist Professor A. M. Shah to the study of the family and household in India. The Household Dimension of the Family in India, widely recognised as a major contribution to our understanding of the Indian family when it first appeared in 1973, remains an indispensable text in the field today. The Family in India: Critical Essays, first published in 1998, covers a wide range of theoretical, methodological, substantive and policy issues relating to the family. Finally, three more recent contributions by Professor Shah are reproduced here, including a 2005 essay in which he reviews the state of family studies in India from the perspective of his many decades of close engagement with the field.
