"The need of the hour is to appraise our budding tourism professionals not only on the nature and typology of the heritage around which the entire tourism industry is moving, but also to acquaint them with the contemporary issues and trends affecting all actors and investors of this smokeless industry. These emerging issues and challenges of the modern tourism industry are focused in the book.
The first chapter, besides elaborating the conceptual meaning of tourism, its nature and forms, explains the barriers to growth of tourism, and issues and trends in India, South Asia and the Pacific.
The second chapter briefly describes the possibilities of developing ecotourism destinations in India, identifies the country’s number of locations with attraction potentials for ecotourism promotion, and makes an indepth interpretation of their strengths and weaknesses.
The third chapter focuses on sustainable tourism planning and development and deals with a couple of tourism destinations severely affected by unplanned tourism development. It further describes some quality tourism projects as well as the role of international associations for sustainable development of these projects.
The fourth chapter is devoted to Buddhist heritage sites of Uttar Pradesh.
The fifth chapter is related to the present status of Human Resource Development and briefly describes the existing structure of educational institutions in the country offering tourism courses to students seeking to opt for tourism as a profession for self-reliance.
The sixth chapter deals with tourism in Uttaranchal State and scans its growth and development right from 1950. It suggests a number of locations with the potential for development of tourism. This chapter has been incorporated in view of the creation of this hill state a year ago. The chapter contains detailed information which should help planners and decision makers to evaluate the state’s tourism potential.
