Tribes constitute a very significant part of the Indian population and are indeed, the intrinsic part of India’s rich cultural heritage. The tribes settled down in India in pre-historic times, inhabiting mostly in the sparsely populated parts of hills and forests of sub-Himalayan and North-eastern regions in the mountain belt of central India between Narmada and Godavari and in the Southern parts of the Western Ghats. Conceptually speaking, tribes are a separate group of persons having their own identity and cultural traits. The tribes have their groups or society. They have customary laws, which are unwritten but they obey them strictly.
The book entitled “Tribal Women and Society” makes a systematic, comprehensive and critical study of the various problems and issues associated with the tribal women of India. The book is the original, comprehensive and critical assessment of tribal women and society. The author has made serious and sincere endeavour to make the book simple, systematic and scientific. It would be an invaluable source of information and knowledge for the academicians, researchers and policy-makers. (Jacket)
