This book examines the impact of modernisation on the tribals of Manipur with the Nagas and the Kukis. The twin forces of modernisation were undoubtedly Western education and Christianity, introduced under British colonial rule in Manipur from 1891. The ready acceptance of Western education and Christianity came through the agency of the Christian missionaries. They effected such a drastic change in the lives of the people that it catapulted the tribals from the old world to the new. While retaining many of the traditional elements of their customs and practices they simultaneously embraced a new way of life. This book will be of interest to all scholars and researchers interested in north-eastern India.
