"Factors like population growth, industrialization have increased the urban population to nearly 30% of the total population of the country due to large scale migration of the rural population to urban areas in the past 2 decades. But the development of basic infrastructure particularly the urban solid waste management to meet the basic needs of the urban population had lagged far behind. In this book attempt is made to put all the available information on the present status of various aspects of urban solid waste management like waste generation, segregation, waste diversion, recycling of solid wastes to that of even the role of rag pickers, itinerant waste buyers, recycling techniques etc., the trends in the generation of urban solid wastes and the possible problems and solutions available as on date to meet the challenges in this sector. Among the 14 chapters and 6 annexure in this book, one chapter is exclusively devoted to the "Urban Solid Waste Management, past, present and future" to provide an insight into the above in addition to describing recycling of degradable urban solid wastes for cluster of urban areas (Annexure 1). As on date this book will be one single source book available for policy makers, students, scientists etc., to know the ground realities of the various visible and invisible mechanisms operating at the ground level as well as the high level of expertise available in the country, the basic infrastructure needed to provide an efficient urban solid waste management system."
