After explaining the difference between voluntary and trained social workers, the work done by voluntary organisations during British period and after independence has been discussed. When Christian Missionaries during the British period exposed the evils of Hindu religion i.e. caste system, child marriage, polygamy, female infanticide etc., many social reformers, including Raja Ram Mohun Roy, M.G. Ranade, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Swami Dayanand, took up the work of social reforms and social service through voluntary organisation. Justice Ranade started the Indian Social Conference parallel to Indian National Congress. It took the form of movement through its branches in various states and districts.
