"The book is an outcome of an in-depth inquiry into various aspects like the socio-economic profile, working conditions of work of the women workers in the unorganised sector. It attempts to identify and understand the problems of these workers besides looking into effectiveness of various welfare legislations, besides exploring the possibilities and prospects for ameliorating their living standards.
The book reveals that the life of the women workers in brick kilns industry is very tough. These women have to perform a dual role relating to production and reproduction. While bearing and rearing children remain their primary responsibility, they are invariably involved in the remunerative activities also. These women are unprotected and suffer from economic exploitation. Their ignorance, illiteracy and poverty have added to their woes all the more. A great majority of them have not been benefited by the protective legislation in the critical areas of wages, maternity benefits, childcare and social security.
The book will serve as a reference guide for the researchers, planners, policy-makers and all those who are concerned with the women issues and the unorganized sector." (jacket)
