"World Trade Organisation (WTO) completed its first decade of existence in 2005. Originally conceived as an institution for creating an uniform code of conduct among its member-countries, WTO is to facilitate and promote the quantity and quality of international trade with the belief that trade is the engine of growth. It has also accelerated the pace of globalization throughout the world in terms of increasing volume of world trade. The neo-liberal ideas of free trade have swept the world, where the WTO has acted as the main vehicle in this process.
After its first ten years it is now high time to have a look at the world economies and specially the developing ones to access the gains and losses obtained due to the WTO operations.
On the whole, this book gives the readers an exhaustive and analytical view of the salient features of the WTO regime experienced in the first decade of its existence both generally and also in a sector specific manner. As the results are not satisfactory for the developing South in general and for South Asian countries in particular, the possibilities and potential of the formation of an Asian Union in the near future has been discussed in detail. This book is expected to be of great interest and importance not only to the researchers and academicians but also to the policy-makers and general readers interested in the activities of the WTO."
